BAUHAUS ANNIVERSARY 2019
A milestone Bauhaus birthday offers an excellent opportunity to take a critical look at its legacy in contemporary architecture: What ideals remain from this avant-garde movement? Are any of the Bauhaus principles or methods still relevant today?
Throughout the book, 10 international authors explore the question of whether and where Bauhaus has left its mark on contemporary architectural events. Its political legacy of modernity is as much a focus in their essays as the significance of Bauhaus ideals for a commercialised and globalised construction industry. The individual contributions discuss these questions against a backdrop of different cultural perspectives brought to the project by authors from the USA, Mexico, Germany and Spain. A photo essay by the Berlin artist Friederike von Rauch, with photos of the Academy of Arts in Berlin’s Hansa Quarter, accompanies the texts. Designed by Werner Düttmann and Sabine Schumann, the Academy is one of the most impressive examples of post-war architecture.
